Granite State Dog Recovery Adoption- Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where are your adoptable dogs posted?

We post our available dogs here on our website, on our Facebook page ADOPT A DOG NH  Petfinder.com and adoptapet.com

Q: I have submitted an application. What happens next?

A: Your application will be reviewed by our adoption coordinators. If we would like to explore your application in detail, you will be contacted by a coordinator for the next steps within 3 to 5 days. Reminder: Our organization is operated by volunteers. We kindly ask for your patience. If you are not contacted, your application was found not to be a good fit for that dog you are applying for, however, it may be a good fit for another. We encourage you to apply if you see another dog who interests you.

Q: How will I know if my application is chosen for a dog?

A: A Granite State Dog Recovery adoption coordinator will call you to conduct a phone interview. If the adoption coordinator believes you are a good fit for the dog, a virtual home visit will then be scheduled. Our team will make a final decision following this process.

Q: Can I be pre-approved for future dogs? Should I apply now?

A: Granite State Dog Recovery does not currently offer pre-approvals for the adoption process, and we do not hold onto applications for an extended period due to the volume of applications we receive. To ensure your application is considered, we highly recommend waiting to apply until you are currently interested in one of our available dogs.

Q: You have a physical shelter location. Can I come by and see the dogs you have available?

A: Meet and greets are for approved adopters only. While we do have a physical shelter location, we operate as a rescue does. This means we like to have adopters chosen before the dog arrives at our shelter. Important: Like many New England based shelters and rescues, not only do we place New Hampshire strays and owner surrender dogs in loving homes, but we also work with southern rescue partners to pull dogs from high kill shelter environments in southern states. The dogs are fostered in the southern states before being transported to our shelter.

Q: Do you need fosters? Can I foster-to-adopt one of your dogs?

A: Granite State Dog Recovery does not foster unless deem medically or behaviorally necessary by our shelter accredited veterinarian. Per the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture (Agr: 1702.01 (d), “‘Foster facilities’ means premises which are not in the business of transferring animals because they house animals solely for medical or behavioral rehabilitation when the animals are owned by a license- holder for another premises.”

Q: I applied previously. Do I need to apply again?

A: Granite State Dog Recovery does not currently offer pre-approvals and does not keep applications on file for an extended period. We highly recommend that you submit a new application if you see another dog you are interested in.

Q: Why wasn’t my application chosen?

A: Our adoption coordinators review many factors to find the best fit for each dog. Even though your application was not chosen for a particular dog does not mean you would not be eligible for a different dog in the future, and we encourage you to reapply. Important: Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please ensure you provide all requested information in your application as it helps our adoption coordinators find the best candidates for each dog.

Q: Where do the dogs in your shelter come from?

A: Granite State Dog Recovery shelters stray dogs and owner surrenders who are from New Hampshire and also rescue dogs from southern states.

Q: What do you charge for adoptions?

A: Our adoption donations are $600 for puppies under one year, $475 for adults 1yr-7yrs and $375 for seniors 8+ yrs. Our dogs are fully vetted with all age-appropriate necessary vaccinations, up to date with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, microchips and a New Hampshire health certificate.

Q: What does my donation pay for?

A: The donation for each dog covers transport into the state, medical costs and/or vetting - spay or neuter, age-appropriate vaccines, flea/tick prevention, heartworm prevention, heartworm testing for dogs older than 6 months of age, fecal exams, wellness checkup and New Hampshire health certificate.

Q: What should I bring when picking up my new adopted dog?

A: A crate for the dog to safely travel in for the car ride home. We recommend a size appropriate VariKennel style plastic crate. Granite State Dog Recovery provides lots of goodies in take home adoption bags. Each dog will always go home with an adoption folder, Martingale collar, leash and/or slip lead.

Q: What if I have questions once I take my dog home?

A: Our team is always available if you have questions or concerns. Please reach out to your adoption coordinator or email gsdradopt@gmail.com.
